I'm going to venture away from my Prelude forum just to post in this thread- leaving oil in the engine longer leaves particles in the oil in the engine longer, even if you switch filters in the time between changes. The way I figure it, it's not worth not just doing the oil change every 3-5,000 (depending on the car, not the oil). It's only $30 (with synthetic) and 1/2 hour.

first off, synthetic is more expensive because its man-made, and its just better than conventional oil. it is NOT the same, in any way. but still, I change the EP every 5k miles, because as stated before, particles do build up in the engine reguardless of what condition its in. still really good frickin motor oil tho.

Hey guys...the oil filter takes out the particles that will do any damage. The concern with the oil is how long it keeps its lubricating qualities.

Are the voices in your head telling you that? :reechy: If Mobil 1 recommends 15K intervals then I would trust them because they're a big company that's probably done lots of R&D with it and they have a reputation to uphold.

Yes. Enron had amazing reputation before it crashed too. So did Worldcom and a bunch of others.

Can Mobil 1EP last 15k miles. Depends on you, the engine, etc. Modern engines such as Honda Accord's 2003 and up recommend 10k oil change intervals with 5-20 (semi-synth) oils. So, I guess they should be able to take 15k on fully synthetic EP oil. However, NOT ALL MILEAGE is created equal. 15k on highway is different from 15k in stop and go traddic. Use common sense. My choice is Mobil 1 Synthetics or Castrol Synthetics (normal - not extended) and Mobil 1 Oil Filter with 4,000-5,000 miles oil change intervals. That keeps me happy that my car is getting a very good service and an extra oil change or two per year will not make me broke.

Then again - to each his own.

btw once you go synthetic, you shoudlnt go back to regular stuff.
if you want oil leaks etc.... then go to synthetic then back regular then again synthetic then regular and watch how the seals brake apart.

They don't really break...the synthetic cleans all the shitty deposits left by the old dino oil off the seals, but you won't get leaks because the synthetic molecules are smaller than dino oil molecules. But if you switch back, yeah, you might get leaks on an old car somewhere because the seals have been claned.

my car has 60k miles on it and has been using mobil 1 since the car was purchased. it was changed every 3-5k miles. the previous owner who had the car from 0-55k miles, used mobil 1 and i am continuing to do this because i hear good things. BUT the problem with purchasing mobil gasoline and mobil oil is that mobil/exxon is the largest supplier of oil to the United States and thus by not purchasing Mobil oil/gas we can help reduce oil prices(smaller companies follow larger companies price increases/decreases)
knowing this i may switch to an alternate oil/gas source.

And thus you'll make another company the largest supplier. The gas companies don't set the price, the markets do... http://money.cnn.com/data/commodities/
