Default Accidently shifted into reverse auto trans!!!

My daughter has a 98 Accord LX and has had an occasional problem with her car stalling while driving. I think that might be due to a bad gas tank sensor or something. Anyway, she tried to restart the car while driving by putting in neutral, but accidently put the auto trans into reverse while going 30mph! Now it makes a loud grind noise when she tries to use reverse.

I assume that she stripped the reverse gear. She is still using the car and I wonder if she is doing more damage or if the trans will have to be replaced anyway. Can just the reverse gear be changed out? Any idea on how much it might cost? Should she take it to Cottman or Ammco or would she be better off bringing it somewhere else? Thanks for any advise you might have.

Its always a good Idea to just have it analyzed by a technician and see what they say about that. About the repair, you would probably need a new tranny cause it would be cheaper and better.
Tranny is a mechanical part and if something is broken inside, it would'nt last more than 1k miles.

Any repairs or work on the transmission would not be cheap, and there is no guarantee that it will be completely fixed. My best bet would to be just sell that car "as is" and get a newer used or brand new car. Once you start having to repair anything, something else is bound to break down, and so on. this will cause your repair bills to be in the thousands. it'll be safer and easier to just buy another car...

most time if you push the shifter into reverse doing 25+, like Jani said, the tranny will realize that there was probably a mistake and just keep you in neutral. Ive done it a few times on my car too that why i know.

but in any event, if it did shift, some one told me you can get a new tranny or just a new reverse gear, but getting a new tranny was more worth while...so choice is yours

I would recommend replacing the tranny.

On a side note... you do not need the push in the button on the shifter go between Neutral and Drive. More importantly the button is REQUIRED to shift into Reverse, "2" or "L". This is done intentionally so you cannot accdentally shift into those gears. The tranny is designed ot easily slip between neutral and drive. IF your going ot be stopped for more than 10 seconds, it's good for fuel consumption and tranny wear to go to neutral. It's a bad habit to use the button while shifting form drive ot neutral. Live and learn I guess.

its not only the transmission that needs to be replaced. you need more parts like axels, pedal box, ecu, ect. it costs more in the end to convert.

hmm... i know people that converted for well under the cost of my girlfriends auto tranny being rebuilt. but then again i suppose that all has to do with the mechanic and what kind of quality the finished product has.
