Shifting into neutral without clutch? Is this normal?
2002 Accord LX sedan 4cyl manual
Should I be able to pull my car out of gear and into neutral easily, while driving, without using the clutch? I am currently able to do so. It just snaps into neutral from 3rd with minimal effort and no gear grinding.

Well I know I sometimes do it by accident and it seems fine as well. I used to know this girl that drove a del sol and she would never depress the clutch before going into neutral. So I guess it's okay because your pulling it out of gear = no grinding cause nothing to grind haha.
I just always hit the clutch because of habit :hsdunno:

As long as you do it when your off the throttle, it should be fine. There's not a big different with using or not using the clutch to shift into neutral as long as your not on the throttle. THe smoothest way ot do it would be ot apply light pressure as you lift off the throttle. IT should slide out of gear easiest at the moment when their is "slack" in the tranny. Meaning that you are niether accelerating or under compression braking. FOr that brief moment, thereis no load on the transmission gear and the gear dogs can disengage easily.

In my opinion it's kind of like shifting gears when the engine is off, with or without the clutch. It's just not what the tranny was meant to do. I say do this type of stuff at your own risk. It may not make a horrible noise but that doesn't mean it's ok.

Oh fellas....brings back ol'school shit. It's called powershifting, matching rev with syncros, slamming all four gears as you go, redline, let off gas and slam it. I had a 352 Mercury in a 42 Ford pickup with a crash box four speed (shaved off every other gear tooth), slipped like butter. Unfortunately on our first test drive going down hill we had a slight accident. We left the hole in the floorboard open after we dropped the tranny and hooked up the ujoints. Engine sounded so good, custom headers, then the front ujoint broke off from all the torque....very ugly. Really.
