Fuel Gauge Variance - 1998 Accord EX
The fuel gauge on my 1998 Honda Accord EX with 77K miles doesn't always accuratly portray the amount of fuel in the tank. For example, when I went to the gas station last night, it took 13.6 gallons to fill it up even though the needle on the gauge relfected it was just under half full. The owner's manual says the tank capacity is 17.12 US gallons, so by way of "guestimate" the tank should have only taken in somewhere between 8-10 gallons. When I drove away from the gas station, the fuel gauge needle only moved so much as to reflect that the tank was ~3/4 full. It stayed there until I came to a stop light, then the needle quickly moved up to indicate the tank was full. Later that night when I went to drive the car again, the fuel gauge needle was at ~3/4 full again--even though I'd only driven ~8 miles since I filled it up.
I've read in this forum and others about problems this model has with the Fuel Sending Unit. Does this sound like the same problem? If so, how much does this part cost, can I change it myself, and how do I change it?
By the way, I've only owned this car for two days, so I haven't really had a long time to observe this, but it seemed so out of whack to me that I thought I'd look for answers.
Thanks in advance for any advice and info.

It's your fulel sending unit. I went through 3 of them on my 98 EX before they finally came up with a revised model that actually worked. Never did it myself because the car was under warranty at the time, so I can't tell you about cost. I do know that it's accessible through a cover plate in the trunk and replacement isn't too difficult.

I have been encountering this problem, and searched for it and found this thread. I know there is a TSB out about the problem. Shows billing .6hrs for labor, and it doesn't look like it's too hard to replace from the directions.
98CoupeV6 have your or any others had this problem?
Anyone confirm how much the fuel sending unit costs? I located it online for around $55, so that's not too bad I guess. Part #17630-S84-A01

I downloaded the TSB a while ago, probably from your posting it, thanks again.
Mine was doing alright for a few months, then the last 2 fillups it has gotten worse. Today though was the first time that it just went to 3/4 after i started the car from getting gas, and 10 miles home, it waivered between 3/4 and almost 100% full. Last week it was down to halfway after 50 miles! My milage is normal, i've been calculating that at fill ups and that is still what it should be.
