Default Towing with an accord

Unfortunantly I have to moce cross country at the end of the summer and have accumulated a lot of junk I have to cart out there. I was planning on getting a UHaul tow behind trailer and towing behind my 2000 accord LX, 4 cyl, Man. I have no mods as of yet but plan to start soon now that I fully own the car. I was wondering if anyone had towed anything with their accord and if it would be able to handle the load? Any help/comments would be appreciated.

I once drove from CA to TX with my old college car - a 1992 Honda Accord LX (4cyl-auto). I bought the Class1 Hitch (max 2,000LB) from UHaul for IIRC ~$120-140 installed.

Notes:
* I towed a 4' x 8' trailer b/c that was the smallest trailer they had available. Having just left college, I didn't have much stuff in the trailer other than boxes, a double-sized futon, and wooden futon frame. All in all, the trailer was probably 2/3rds full.

* I don't remember the exact MPG I got driving from CA to TX via Arizona but it was ~20MPG with the A/C cranked and driving 80MPH most of the time. I'm pretty sure I would have gotten ~28-30MPH had I not been towing the trailer.

* I thought it was amusing that the trailer says you should drive a max speed of 45MPH. IIRC, the car+trailer topped out at ~95MPH. In my dumber college days I think I was able to get the Honda Accord to ~128-30MPH.

* I just used a simple combination lock and chain to lock the trailer to the car. After 2000mi, the lock had been beat to crap and had to be cut off the chain in order to release the trailer.

I treated that particular honda like hell but it still drove like a champ and didn't overheat the entire trip. In fact, my dad still uses that car as a grocery getter in TX.

Regards,
-g

i towed all the way from Indiana to California when i moved to cali last year..... got a class 1 hitch and towed the 2nd smallest U-haul there is.... the U-haul, my back seats, and trunk were all full... backseats were so full that i couldn't even use my rear view mirrors :P

it was all fun, but the worst part was in Colorado... the climb up the Rockies was crazy... going uphill at 15 mph and stopping every 3 miles to cool down the engine and brakes

Why not just rent a u-haul truck and trailer/car dolly and put the junk in the u-haul and tow the car and keep the milage off of it?

I had thought about that but I think it will be way more expensive. I need to look into it more. Just graduated college so cash is always and issue and am looking to put it into my car rather than a rental truck.

why don't you pile the accord up with as much stuff as you can and ship everthing else out. I'm going to be moving from Mass to AZ in the fall and what I can't fit into my accord will meet up with me via Fed Ex. I don't want to put any extra stress on the accord with a trailer hitch.

you'll spend more money shipping all ur stuff via fedex vs. renting a hitch and knowing your shit is right behind you. vs relying on fedex to deliver.

I'm not going to have a lot to ship out, I don't own a lot of big ticket items. I'll ship out what ever clothing I can't fit, and maybe some pots and pans. The biggest thing I'm going to bring are going to be a TV, and my trombone. everything else is clothing. thats about it, I'm just going to buy alot of stuff once I get out there. Heck, I'm going to sleep on an Areo bed air mattress for a while till I get a real bed. but it does sound like cshuck01 is going to have to bring a lot with him.
