The answer is HIDs - you can get a sey for as low as $500. If you cant afford that, i'd stick to oem.

I can think of LOTS of things I'd rather spend $500 on than car headlights.
So what kind of replacement bulbs are nice other than these BS Silverstars and don't cost as much as three of my car payments?

If shopped for, you can find genuine phillips hid kits for $400-ish. Depending on your driving habbits, it's more of a safety thing.
I drive about 80 minutes on a 2 lane highway surrounded by corn fields during the school year to see the girlfriend. HID's help me see 100X more than halogens. Also (knocks on wood) the bulbs have been terrific for the past 4 years.
So ... if you get HID "style" bulbs or anything claiming to be "white" (PIAA, Sylvania, Nokya, etc) and they blow out every 6 months ... you're more than breaking even.
My hid kit $350, 4+ years of use.
Bulbs are $50 (on average), needs to be replaced every 6 months (on average) @ 4 years of use (changed approx 2 times a year) = $400.

I had the same problem. I liked how they looked but they went out on me too quick. If I remember correctly, about 4 went bad on me in about 6 months. I replaced it with stock bulbs and no problems for about 6 months now.
