Default 98 accord v6 weird engine noise

Hi guys,

I have about 84k on my 98v6. Last couple of days has been pretty hot so I used the AC a lot. Yesterday I noticed this high pitched whistling sound when I'm accelerating on the gas. The sound also magnifies when I roll my windows up or down and keep holding the button. I have no clue what it could be and want to get an idea before I take it to a mechanic. Thanks in advance.

Okay, I searched alternator and all the threads don't seem to relate with my problem. I don't have any warning lights that are on the instrument panel.

Coupe is right------your problem is the alternator. I had the same whining noise last summer, and brought the car RIGHT to the dealer; it was indeed a bad alternator that probably went because I have an 800 watt power amp sucking juice from my car's stock electrical system; but MY alternator on my '99 Accord went at under 55K.......

No, I'm telling you it's your alternator and suggesting that you search it to figure out how to fix the problem. And just about every alternator thread has to do with an odd noise from the engine

Sorry I couldn't seem to figure that out, but I'm taking it to a shop today and have them take a look. I'll let u guys know what the problem is, i HOPE it's not the alternator as you said, cuz from the sound of other ppo's problems....it sounds expensive :nervous:

Just got back...
The mechanic checked the battery and showed me that it's dead...the voltage seemed to be around 12.5v and dips to around 7-8volts when starting up, so I didn't know that it's bad....he said that normally its 13-14v idle and about 10-11volts starting up...

He also said that if the battery has been bad then alternator needs to be replaced as well...and he quoted me $270 for the alternator + $80 labor....total for the alternator and battery would be around $450.

I think I might hold out and wait till I get home to a trusted mechanic cuz I have a feeling I'm getting ripped off.

They cost $150 on ebay and you can do it yourself with little to no mechanical skill.

And I hope the shop isn't charging you, because it's definitely the alternator. A huge weak point of the AV6.

Sorry, didn't see this post. He's right if the voltage is that low...replace the battery and the alternator. Like I said in my previous post, you can do them both yourself unless you have money to throw away. It took me an hour to change my alternator and it was kind of fun.

The battery being dead doesn't necessarily mean that the alternator needs to be replaced, but trust me yours will be hitting the shitter soon if it's making the whirring noise at this point. And it sucks big time being stuck when your alternator isn't even producing enough voltage to keep the car running with the lights on.
