Today while driving around I noticed a weird sound when turning. I knew that my axel boots were dry and would eventually need to be replaced. So I checked the driver's side where the noise wqas coming from and sure enough it was ripped and I got a nice hand full of grease. The passenger side is just dry.

I called the shop I deal with and got a qoute for 260 dollars per side, includes 1 yr parts and labour warranty. Dealer said about 600 for both....Good price?

 

Not bad I guess...I would expect more than 1 year on parts though. Esp if they are using re-man axles.

I've replaced axles on a couple of Hondas. I just got lifetime warranty remanufactured axles (complete with packed boot, etc) for around $75 (after COR refund).

I guess it just depends on if you have the time and want to do it yourself.

if you have an automatic 94-97 accord i got a fairly new driverside axle for cheap...

 

damn, 600$!! thats a lil too much, screw the dealer. I paid 150.00 for both my axles and they came with the boots on my prelude and me and my dad installed them. Its not that hard. I suggest if u get new axles, do it yourself, itll save u a ton of money. I mean all your payin the mechanic for is for labor, but if u gotta do it, then have a mechanic do it, i jus dont want u to get ripped off jus for replacing axles. Neways good luck.

 

Thanks guys. I really dont know how to do it, and its not clear to me in my Helms manual. And I live in an duplex with no garage so realy no place to do it. I figured I can get it done and done right.

 

most shops in so cal charges abt $160 for both sides, part and labor... not sure abt ur place tho

 

260 each side, 520 for both including labour....

Seems that Lansing MI is pretty expensive.

get a helms manual and do it yourself. its REALLLY simple.

 

i've replaced my axles a couple of times before, and it's pretty simple. u can look up the instructions in autozone's website, if ur model/year is available there. at least for my 95 accord, i had to borrow a spindle nut socket from autozone, and everything else was straightforward. if ur replacement halfshaft is remanufactured (carquest, etc.) make sure the dimensions are correct (not just the length from end to end). i installed one before that popped out of my transaxle while i was driving.
