Default newbie with his first Honda

Ok I got this Roach today for 100.00 from a co-worker.. it is ROUGH.. but I plan to make it look decent and try ot get her all up and running good....

here is the DL on it:
160,xxx miles
Man trans
2bbl
1.8L
smokes blue (oil)
possibly uses coolant
has a shaky run (engine has a sort of miss maybe head gasket)

what has been done
new inexpensive plug wires
new NGK plugs
new under hood fuel filter
new ign cap
new ign rotor
oil changed with 10W40 Mobil, engine restorer
new air filter
vac hoses inspected and all seem to be fine

whats needed to be done
possibly both outter tie rods
possibly both lower control arms
possibly new frt/rear brakes (need to inspect them there is no noise or pedal fade)
timing needs adjustment (at distributor)
compression test
remove cat

it overheated once on the guy and I wired the fan in and topped off the coolant and now it dont overheat AT ALL stays nice and cool..

I drove it today and it was preaty good (with a mis) and only begin to smoke blue after about 10m at a light.. nothing at first.
it had the mis through first and second but seemed to clear up in higher RPM (over 2800rpm) in third gear

what all do u guys recomend I do as of removing parts or upgrading parts (just to make it run better, no hi po here) also any experience u guys have with these cars please pass down..

tomorrow I go get a new trunk lid (I hope) and start sanding the hood to get it ready for primer...

A blown head gasket would explain most of your problems. your rings are also probably starting to go. you need a competent mechanic to do a compression and blow by test. it sounds like you may also have a burnt valve. What year accord is it? 84,85?

notanSI, you'd be better off going here - http://www.civic1200.com/discus/ It's a 1st and 2nd gen Civic site, but it is filled with information regarding all 1st-2nd gen Hondas and knowledgeable members. Your engine is an EK1, which is very desirable for engine swaps in the old Civics... so you should have no problem at all getting the information you need.

compression test is your best bet for a overall view on how well the engine is running and what might be the issue.

I had no idea you were a mechanic. My 87 had a similar problem to yours (hesitating b4 2800rpm) and it turned out to be a burnt exhaust valve. it had 330K on it at the time though. Over 11 years of honda ownership the only quirk I have encountered is the fact that these cars run for so long with no problems in exchange for routine maintenence.

I heard they have tendencies to burn valves.. so I may remove the head here after I do a bit more diagnosis to check it all out

thx .. I was a mechanic by trade now for fun and a side job.. the ticker put me behind the counter as a parts guy..
