Default Question w/ 1999 Accord

Alright, Im new on here and would appreciate any useful information regarding my problem..

I have a 1999 Accord sedan, manual trans... The car is either burning or losing oil really fast.. I had my oil changed last towards the end of september and within I would say a month or 1500 miles at the most, the engine was basically dry. I had it checked and looked under the car for any leaks and none that the mechanic or I could find.. They didn't really have an idea of what problem could be.. Neither did the dealing and they're asking for crazy money just to look at. Ya know how they do..

As far as performance is concerned.. When the oil is running low, the car picks up, hesitates or kicks back a little, then picks up again for every gear.. it doesn't do it tho when the oil level is good.. At times, I get a smell of rotten eggs thru the vents when I go up a hill and some what lose power.. this is not all the time and the smell isn't really strong either.. They were saying this is usually a sign that the catilet converter is going bad.. If that is the case tho, is it causes the oil consumption too?

At this point, I don't mind fixing the converter even tho theyre saying that part doesn't really go bad.. But if I have to get it changed then fine but I want it to do away with that oil consumption problem too..

Have ya ever had or heard of this problem? Like I said any comments are appreciated!! The car only has 93,000 miles... oil changes every 3500-4000 miles too...

Thanks!!!!

The cat can go bad it just doesn't happen a whole lot.
I'm no mechanic though, so I hope someone else can answer a little better.
Welcome to HAN.

the 6th gen accord is notorious for burning thru oil. I've got the same car as you and my car does the same exact thing, and I've got 120,000 miles. I've been using Engine Restore lately and the problem has gone away. Before the engine restore I was putting in 2-3 quarts of oil in between oil changes. try the engine restore out, my car runs so much smoother with it now. you can pick it up for a couple of bucks at a local auto parts store.

I beat the crap out of it on a regular basis if that's what you mean.
I shift up to redline on a regular basis.

Thanks skabone... Between the end of september and now I had to put a total of 5 more quarts of oil and its getting low again... I'm a try that restore... How many quarts of that restore and how often do you put it in?

no prob, you only need to put in one container in between oil changes, and do it right after your oil change for the best results.

I have a 98 accord ex 4 cly with VTEC and at 98000 miles my cat went bad and the dealership replace it for like 850 dollars, biggest rip ever. The dealership said it failed a little early, but i drive the crap out of it so maybe thats why

WHOA!!!! $850? This mechanic told me he'd do it for like $200- 300 and he was talking like $300 would be exagerating...

I believe it tho.. I take good care of my car but I understand some parts go faster than other and thats cool- I just want to resolve my issue with the oil.. If its b/c of the converter, fine change that ish.. I just want, just like everybody else, start changing pieces and still have the same problems...
