Default Preparing for Winter

Hey guys. Simple ABS question. This will be my second winter with my Acc 02ex. I have ABS, but to be honest, I don't know how they actually work. I used to feel ABS when I slam on the brake on a ice last year. But my car still slides. If there was a car infront of me, I prabably hit it. So what is the point having ABS? how do they work?

ABS or no ABS if you are in ice it will still slide. ABS pulsates your brakes so they don't lock up during hard braking.

The point of ABS is to prevent your wheels from just locking up completely which allows you to still be able to steer to some extent. If you just lock up your brakes, all you can do is hang on for the ride, but with ABS, you may be able to steer yourself out of a situation.

ABS can actually cause your braking distance to increase slightly on some surfaces like gravel, etc. it doesnt necessarily stop you shorter all the time, its mainly a system that allows you to maintain some control of the car.

I've read on studies that cars with ABS still have the same amount of accidents as cars that do not. I think it's mainly because some people don't know how to use ABS correctly.

if abs is kicking in, it doesn't matter what tires you have...with snow tires, you will be able to brake harder/stop faster without abs kicking in

abs comes on when it senses one of your tires is about to/alread is locking up..a tire will lock up and slide once its amount of grip has been exceeded..so if you have a stickier tire, you will be able to stop faster as opposed to a shitty tire...same applies to snow and snow tires because snow tires will obviously provide more grip

Unhook your ABS module sometime and test it out...you can brake amazingly straight in snow with ABS compared to without, especially if your car's balance is off a bit.

This is IMO the best advantage of the newer ABS systems which also effeciently distribute the braking force to each wheel. SO instead of just simply modulating the wheel that has locked up, the computer also sends more pressure to the other wheels which still have traction. This greatly enhances stability and reduces stopping distanes on uneven, bumpy pavement and while cornering.

EFD amounts to a automatic computer controlled porportioning valve. Ironically this simple system orignially developed in Formula 1 racing, is now illegal with the newer rules. A driver in F1 must manually adjust teh front and rear brake balance.
