In winter, how early should I start my car up before I go?

how can i keep the rpms low if the engine doesnt want to upshift?
>>>
At what rpm does your transmission shift out of gear? Anything below 3k rpms is considered relatively low for the 4-cylinder. My 5th gen auto will typically shift out of first between 2.5-3k rpms under light-moderate acceleration.

Waiting because you want to get into a warm car for comfort reasons is one thing, but you DONT need to idle your car at all on a cold day. You are just wasting gas.
Start it up, and drive away, but dont beat on the engine yet. Keep the RPM's as low as possible, and shift, or let it shift on its own as quick as possible. When the temp gauge hits normal, dont punch it yet as all parts of the engine are not up to normal operating temps, even though your coolant is. Wait a few more minutes, and then feel free to drive as hard as you want.

Hyde said it! You are wasting gas! Why not be on your way while you warm up?
I do understand the reason to warm up the car so the windows defrost, you can't drive your car with zero visibility. I need to invest in a remote starter, pisses me off that I have to go out 10 min early and start my car in the winter. Then again, here in GA winter ain't that long anyway, lucky me eh'?
