In winter, how early should I start my car up before I go?

How does one get this "remote start"? It sounds like something that would appeal the lazy me.

you can go a few different ways, get a new alarm system that has remote start as an option. or just buy a remote start that allows you to start the car up. goto ebay and look around and do a search

My remote start was the best money I've ever spent.

on a warm engine, my accord idles just below 1000

on a cold start... it idles at about 1250 and likes to hold gears longer to heat up the engine

im gonna let it idle more often now

Read my post. There's nothing wrong with driving your car within 30 seconds of start up on a cold day unless you keep the RPMs very low. Technically it's the best way to warm up the engine in terms of wear.

They say it's best (and otherwise unecessary) to not let the car idle more than ten minutes. As everyone has suggested, it is okay to drive the car before it has reached full operating temp, but avoid heavy throttle acceleration. I usually let the engine idle for about a minute or two before driving and then accelerate conservatively until the engine has reached operating temp...especially when I'm in Michigan during the winter months. Warms the engine up quicker thus getting hot air blowing through the vents sooner.
