Okay. I have a 1999 Accord V6. Love it. 106,000 miles. I have read and heard that the transmissions on these cars are not good. Even recalled, I've heard.

I called my dealership, and they tell me that there are no service bulletins of any type on my car regarding transmission when I gave them my VIN.

I look at Consumer Reports, and they love this car. The tranny on the 1999 model gets an 'excellent' rating by CR, while the 98, 00, and 01 models get a 'very good' rating.

Does this mean that many years surrounding the 1999 have tranny problems - but not the 99? What's gives?

Are there transmission problems with this car? When I mean problems, I mean a problem where A LOT of these cars are having transmission failures. If so, what is the common failure mode? What signs of upcoming problems do I look for?

Any help or info on this topic on my 1999 Accord V6 is appreciated!

 

Mine went at 150k miles, I had it replaced with a 2000 tranny with 30k miles.

It's hit or miss...150k was plenty for me. The only reason why you see so many people having problems with the trannies is because they come to message boards looking for help. It has been documented that around 2.7% of all "problem trannies" died prematurely. But people make it out to be a bigger deal than it really is.

There was never a recall on the tranny, only an extended warranty...I don't know, use the search button if you want to find out more. The tranny isn't as strong as it could be, but it's not bad by any means.

And it's not like it really matters for you...when the tranny goes, it goes. Noone is going to be able to predict when. The symptoms are obvious and slow.

Honda has alot of problems with its 5speed V-6 trannies. The others seem to be ok. The 5speeds were the ones recalled, and seem to be dropping like flies in the CL/TL's.

 

What is a CL/TL?

 

The Acura CL & Acura TL. They are built off the Accord platform, as are their engines and trannies.

 

I'm pretty sure I have the tranny problem on my 1998 I4. By chance, does anyone know (estimate) how much it will cost to have a new tranny replaced by honda? I'm going to get an estimate from honda once i have time.

 

This problem is over hyped, they had a 2-3% failure rate at most that is low as $h1t in the world of Autotranny failure.

If you loose an auto tranny at 150k, that's not so bad auto trannies by design build heat and will always die at some point. Manuals burn up the clutch, auto trannies kill the clutch bands then need rebuilt.

If you have 100k+ Accord and she runs great, just drive it an be happy.

My sister's 02-v6 has 86k and runs like new to this day, treat it right and you should be fine.

I'd recommend an Accord auto to anyone, I mean would you own a GM auto over a Honda auto....I think not.

 

true that, my car has 82k miles and my friends ford had around 60k miles and about 5months ago we both drove to work "nyc dont drive there"" and late night we were going to the joint and about 2 block down the street his car broke down while it was still running. his problem n one night, transmission dead alternator dead timing belt broke even a new battery he need it lol so yeah my car is 8yrs old but still better than mostly other brand. i would buy honda anytime again. i feel bad that i couldnt help him, looking under the hood i had no idea what is what neither did he.

 

I replaced my 98 I4 tranny at 76K. Honda paid some of it. I have to pay about 1200.00 myself.

 

Just...drive it nicely...and....change the fluid often
