Would 5w30 cause any potential problem to engine?
guys,
Just wondering if 5w30 is used instead of 5w20 (Honda recommended), will potentially damaged the engine?
My car is 2002 Accord I4, and it's still under warrenty, but after the warrenty is over, I am thinking to use 5w30 bcos it's much cheaper (since I will do it myself).
I called Honda Canada, and they said if you want to keep the warrenty, you must use 5w20 (req'd proof of purchase and licenced mechanic to change the oil).
thnx

No it will be fine, in many cases some Honda dealers don't even use 5w20 for that reason many use non-Honda 5w30 oils.
The change in oil weight is for fuel mileage and emmisions only, you likely won't notice a different at all.
I did switch to 5w50 Synthetic and did see a significant MPG increase. I now use 5w30 Synthetic since I didn't notice needed benefit in my case for the extra 50weight in Ohio.
Many sights like www.hparts.com do sell Honda 5w20 for a fairly good price if you are worried and cost is a concern.
There is nothing in you warranty about needing a mechanic change your oil to keep the warranty. If I recall you can even use 5w30 per the manual if 5w20 is not available at the time.
At least the 02 V6 cars say this.
