Default Brake Light Problem

Hey Folks,

I have a 98 Accord V6. My Brake light on my gauge cluster has come on yesterday and today. It's strange... brakes work fine. Also strange, the light goes off when I apply my brakes and come to a stop. I apologize if this is something that's been covered... or if it's in my owner's manual (I am w/o the owner's manual) I did the search function and was fruitless.

stranger still! my Brake light on my 88 Civic has come on starting 4 days ago!! is it a temperature thing? it has gotten pretty cold here in Jersey the past week.

Thanks for your help!!!

The brake light means you need fluid in the master cylinder.

*edit* kinda funny cuz mine just went on today on my way to school. It went off after 10 mins or so, so maybe the cold was causing it to read a little lower than normal.

What is it with guys calling me "man"? That's not my girlfriend in my avatar, that's me foo!

Anyhoo.... under the hood, look for a clear-sided reservoir (at least in my 4th gen)

Brake fluid reservoir is back against the firewall, right above the brake pedal but in the engine compartment. There's a float switch in the cap, you'll see a couple wires coming from it.

If you check & it's full, unplug the wires for a day or 2. If the light never comes on then it's probably a flaky float switch.

The other thing that light does is a handbrake reminder. There's a little button switch under the brake handle. Sometimes that's flaky or bent or something. If that's the problem your light will still come on even when you unplug the wires at the brake fluid reservoir.
