Default B16A Swap - FAQ

Okay, I'm planning on doing this swap pretty soon. I have a few questions that I'm hoping the people on this board with a little more experience could answer...

1) Hmotorsonline.com seems to be the place to buy from, they garuntee an average of 35k. The motor could be from a 92 though!!! Should I be worried about what year they're gonna give me? I'd really like a 2000 Also, are they usually pretty clean?

2) Will this give my car power steering? (95 Civic DX's missed out).

3) How much does shipping tend to run?

and finally...

4) How easily is this gonna go into my 95 DX coupe?

Thanks alot for whatever input you can leave. I hope with this engine, and the Edlebrock turbo kit I can have a mean ass car.

1.) Hmotors is good. Everyone says 35k. I don't believe it and neither should you. If I were you, I'd do a timing belt, water pump, spark plugs, oil pump seal and other minor stuff. Just to be on the safe side, and plus doing tha stuff with the motor out is cake.

2.)No if you don't have power steering you'll need to add power steering. Really not worth it, and it'll put more drag on the motor if you put it on. I just recently converted to manual steering so I could ditch power steering. The hassle isn't worth it.

3.) Shipping on motor is usually around $300, and an extra $30 for a residential drop off. Prices vary on location. Hmotors is in california, to PA expect $330.

4.) Swap is easy to do. If you can change oil you can do this. I recommend doing a swap for everyone no matter how little you know. Once you start you'll see everything and figure it all out, and with the internet questions get answered quickly. Plus, there's tons of write ups and HOW-TO's.

as long as you get the b16a out of the 92-95 Si-R then it will drop in like a peice of cake, and a lil tip as far as the vtec wires are concerned I went to a junkyard and cut out an old harness to get the extra wire plugs I needed to put into the dx harness. The swap is pretty straight forward if you have a good set of tools and a few knowledgeable buddies to help you out. Def. able to do it in a weekend if you prepare and have all the parts you need. I can't stress research enough. Any specific questions PM me.

Too bad a 2000 would be harder to swap in. 96+ engines are OBD-2 and do not plug up to 92-95 OBD-1 cars without some parts swapping.

If you are concerned about federal law, swapping an engine into a chassis newer then that engine is a no-no, but noone really checks it (unless you live in California, which you don't have to worry about.)

example:
'92 engine into '95 car: bad.
'95 engine into '92 car: good.

This law exists to keep people from swapping stuff like '69 426 Hemi engines into new Dodge trucks and stuff like that, where emissions would be a big concern. No one really notices when a Honda engine is off a few years, because it is not nearly as obvious and it still runs just as clean.

So the ECU that comes with the swap wouldn't change it to OBD-2?

I guess if I get this swap with the LSD Tranny I would be good. I kinda wanted power steering because it feels smoother, but we'll see if I can get used to the feel of it.

I have 2000 right now, and I'll be getting anywhere from 500-1000 in the next month or so.

So I'll probably purchase the engine Mid-September

So I'm looking at... 2350 for the engine, plus 300 for the LSD tranny... 2650, plus shipping 2980... so like 3000 total.

Then I gotta figure out how much it'll be to get all the little stuff mentioned in this post, plugs, water pump, etc.

I will eventually put a turbo kit in this engine.

With all the stuff that I need to put this engine into a DX and make sure the engine is in good working order, should I be looking around 3500?

I don't quite understand what you are saying.

If you buy a swap from a 2000 model year car, it will be OBD-2. That is bad. You want OBD-1, and it takes a bit of work to convert an OBD-2 engine to OBD-1.

He could buy a ECU Jumper, OBD1 to OBD2, like $175 for one of them.

I don't really trust those things. If I do the job, I'd rather the parts matched for simplicity's sake even if it is more work during the swap.

why would you want a 2000 motor? That mite be the dumbest thing I have ever heard. Most people try to jumper down from obd-2 to an obd-1 ecu, if I were you I would stick with the 92-95 obd-1 motor. I mean if you have a shit load of time and know your way very well around your vehicle I guess you could go obd-2..but why??
