When you engage the clutch, the engine starts turning over and the alt is generating current... basically the car thinks its running like normal and fires right up.

When I do it, I let the clutch out and push the throttle in at the same time. If you get the timing right, the car smoothly cuts on and starts going under its own power.

I have a 87 crx hf and i'm getting the alternator light coming on sperratically while i'm driving.

Maybe replace the alternator?

Take your car to a local Autozone or similar, they should be able to test it for free.

Your belt might be slipping or the voltage regulator is going out. Autozone or checker test is your friend.

I thought it was that the car can be run off the battery only without an alternator, just that you'll drain your battery after a while. I remember when I was in FSAE we used only batteries in our car with no alternator....

The battery would drain pretty quickly, but it would work just fine for a day or two. You can also run only off an alternator with no battery, but that is a very bad idea for cars that aren't designed for it. The ones that are have little capacitors (mini-batteries, if you will) to smoothen the power output of the alt.
