If you were following too closely, and if there are set rules that define "following too closely", and you violated those rules, then you are outta luck. You WERE tailgating (assuming that you were too close to the trailer in front of you, according to the guidelines. If that is the case, lying in court doesn't help any. oc-civic has the right idea. You'd be surprised at how much people pre-judge you just on your mannerisms, clothing, and speech. No, it's not fair, no it's not really right, but the problem is that people deal with other people all the time. People generate impressions based on a certain mannerism that are noticed of others. The ticket may be BS, or it may not. If there are no fixed guidelines as to how closely you can follow another car, it's your judgement vs. the cop's. Considering the extensive experience the cop has had with driving training and field work, he may be a better judge of people's abilities, on average, than the average person.
The ticket itself is probably winnable, though...
As to why the cop stopped you for 20 minutes, well, that may be something else. I don't think the fact that you are Iranian necessarily has anything to do with it. It is probably more your car than anything else. A fat tailpipe, shiny rims, lowered car, all of those things give an impression of you, whether you like it or not. It may be that that particular cop has pulled over LOTS of cars like that, and it may be that a disproportionately large portion of those cars happened to be involved in running from the law, drug trafficking, or possession. If that is the case, then of course the cop is going to see whether you may have some sort of illegal in the car. That's called profiling, and it stinks, and it isn't fair, and it's not legal (according to the law, that is), but it's real, and it does happen. If you want to not be bothered by people, whether it's cops or anything else, don't make yourself attractive to that sort of thing. It stinks, it sucks, it isn't fair, but that's life.
Driving around in a fully modded car, complete with loud exhaust, stickers, lowered suspension, shiny wheels, all the visual and aural trimmings gets you noticed. If you don't want to be noticed, don't drive in a tricked out car. I can't make policy, nobody really can. It's a price to pay for freedom of expression. Sure, you can say whatever you want, but you may be responsible for what it is that you said... Funny irony in all that.
Go to court. Dress reasonably (collared shirt, belt, slacks, and nice shoes), speak intelligibly (remember, your target audience is the court, not some of your friends, so you will have to speak what the court considers 'properly' at least to be given a chance at being heard), present your case in a plain, matter of factly manner. Show ZERO emotion (NEVER yell in court, EVER). Respect the position of the court at all times (don't address the judge as 'yo'), never call the prosecution 'crack smokin morons'. It's partially a game, and a show. The best you can do is make the judge think you are a reasonable person, and he/she will probably act based on reason ('yo man, you trippin' doesn't help your case at all)
You're not there to point out how the cop treated you (at least, not in traffic court!). That is just to argue the ticket itself. If you have a complaint against the officer, you need to go to the police station and file a complaint. Do NOT bring that up in court (sure fire way to get the judge to tell you to "shut up". It's not relevant to the ticket itself).

profiling is a good thing....

this is why... Racism is wrong... profiling and racism are NOT the same thing... if 90% of the terrorist to ever blow up an american plane with a bomb, were of arab decent, and 5% were "other" races.. would you rather see the military focus on the group that is PRIMARILY resposable or would you rather see them waste time patting down an 80 yr old white grand mom... im NOT RACIST... AT ALL.. but if 90% of italian men (which i happen to be)were responsable for ARMED BANK ROBERRY i myself would not have a problem with facing a Q&A sesion inside a bank because i "fit the profile & looked suspicious" safety and security come with a price.. people need to learn that.. b4 it is too late

Let's see. What did the original poster talk about? I seem to remember things like "I hope I win the court case". I just added some experience that I have had in court to the discussion. A lot of people here were slinging attitude around, which is fine and dandy when you're BSing with your friends, but gets you screwed over in court. If you don't want my advice, then fine, don't listen. You think that I am a noObIe (is that l33t?)? Ok. Fair enough, I only have a few posts here since HAN came back up. Perhaps that does make me a noObIe, then...

If you don't like my suggestions, don't listen. This isn't a dictatorship. You aren't required to read my posts. But if there is something wrong with it, then say something useful. Hmmm.. It strikes me that your's was a 'me too' post then... Interesting.
