Default NooB Here

Hello all. I'm just looking for some care advice. I'm selling my '92 Accord and am looking to get something newer, that I can kind of sink my teeth into. I don't know a helluva lot about cars, right now, but I'm anxious to learn.

Anyway, what car would you suggest buying? I don't really like civics with hatchbacks, but anything else is cool. I was really interested in a '00 Si, but.. there aren't many to be found. The car can't be any older than '00. Help please, thanks

CBear916,
Well, if you don't like the hatches, look into a 92+ Civic Coupe. What year you buy really depends on what you can afford. What I would suggest, as someone whos learning about cars, is to buy one that has not been modified at all. Also, get the factory shop manual so you can get the whole gist of how to work on these things. Additionally, a good set of tools will help immeasurably.
Depending on where you are, a Civic coupe can be had pretty inexpensively...so shop around. A lot of people are looking for the hatches and driving the cost up accordingly compared to a comparable coupe...so that's something in your favor.

Thanks for the reply. Also, what kind of difference would I see between an Si coupe and an EX? If i worked on an EX could I make it fairly quick as well? Grr, I wish there were more Si's around.

CBear916,
I think the Si coupe had 15 or so hp more than the EX coupe. There were other differences like rims, maybe thicker sway bars etc. Also, if I recall correctly, the Si had much taller gearing, so at highway speeds you were pulling something like 4k rpms. That's fine for getting off the line quickly...but there goes your gas mileage.
Anything can be made as fast as you want with a suitable application of money, time, spilled beer and skinned knuckes.

wtf...noob..stop talking..

the Si has a dohc 1.6 motor. 160bhp
the ex has a sohc 1.6 motor. 127bhp

it has rear disc brakes also...different stock suspension and so on.its a different car. do a search, and then start asking questions.

Thanks, one more thing (sorry I'm such a noob)

If I get too new of a Civic will I have a hard time doing anything with it? Someone told me that a 2003 isn't the best idea, because they changed the suspension, or.. something like that. Aside from the money factor, what affect will the year have on the car?

2003 just came out not too long ago..so the aftermarket products for it will be limited for now.

Right,
Additionally, the most recent generation Civic changed back to McPherson struts up front from the previous double A arm setup.

No, it just means that there wont be as many aftermarket options for the newer one, because they changed it so drastically.

Civics have had double wishbone suspension since 88, so the aftermarket companies have had plenty of time to come up with products, where as they've only had a couple years to fool around with the new civic.
