Just make sure the seller has good feedback and read the ENTIRE ad. Some guy was selling pics of engines trying to scam people so be careful.

I, for one, had bought a 95 GSR motor/tran/ecu off ebay from an individual. If I could give you any concrete information, it would be to buy from a company. Whether its a company local, on the internet, or off of ebay. Just make sure its not an individual. Although you can receive pictures and the word of the seller, it still does not give you any security. Mine came with everything and I had to invest alot of money just to get it to run. My transmission was bad, along with a fried ecu, and also the altenator and coil were both inoperable. I suggest a company because if anything goes bad or something comes broke, you can have some leeway with a company. Usually companies have guarantees and don't want to look bad to other sellers, therefore giving you alot more security than someone selling their used motor. Now, if the individual is local, but selling on ebay, see if you can't stop by and check it out yourself. That would be the only way I would buy a motor from an individual. Hope that I helped a little bit.

my buddy bought one from an individual and it was a "complete" swap but when the motor got here the starter alternater intermediate shaft and axles weren't with the motor but they were in the pic the dude sent him so i would go with a company and not an individual

I would never buy a motor if it were not local because you can't inspect the engine yourself and you have to pay for shipping on top. If anything goes wrong, and the seller agrees to replace or repair anything, guess you's going to pay shipping both ways for the part.

a local buy isn't really a viable option for those of us who don't live in CA.

Don't do it. I did and I regret it severly. I bought it from one of the biggest junkyards in the nation, too.
