Default cv boot cracked... now what?

well after hearing wierd noises today i decided i sohuld take my wheels off and do my brakes which were really overdue. sure enough on the wheel that i macked and bent my rim on i also found grease everywhere which brought my attention to a cracked cv boot.
SO
i guess rebuilding the joint is out of the question.
is purchasing a remanufactured axle the best choice?
is this somethin i want done at the shop or is this something that i can do myself?

ever happen to anyone else?

You can do an axle yourself. All you need is basic tools, 32mm axle nut, breaker bar.

you might be able to find one at a junkyard if money is an issue...and if you have the right tools you can do it yourself although it's must easier if your cars on a lift.

i wouldnt say clacking also i do put a lot of wear on my car (ie hard turns etc. but thats only the last 3000 miles or so b4 that it was grandma driven) i think the noises i was getting was either that dust plate behind the caliper or the actual brakes themselves.... the left pad was VERY worn (down to the metal on the top).

i talked to a mechanic friend of mine today and he said that the cv joints last a while (months maybe years) even whith the boot cracked, so i figure its been cracked for about a week (im assuming it cracked when i hit the curb) so just putting anew boot on wont be that big of a job. he said the hardest part about it is the bolt that connects the LCA and the wishbone thingy for the shock sometimes rusts and gets stuck in the bushing and its really hard to get out.

anyone every replace their cv boot? wanna do a write up, point me to one, or if there isnt one i might even make one when i do mine....
