Back when I was a stupid kid, I got busted for reckless driving and criminal mischief (tearing through people's yards hitting trashcans and doing sod burnouts and whatnot in my '77). Not only did the cop not show up to court... he entirely neglected to turn in the ticket....

....as embarrassing and irrelevant as that wae ...

Here in good 'ol SC you can pull up to a redlight beside a cop, and when the light turns green you can take off like a bat out of heck, spin your wheels, catch 2nd gear, etc, and as long as you 1) DON'T exceed the speed limit and 2) DON'T cross the lane boundaries the cops won't do anything to you. Their thoughts on the matter are that it's your gas, your tires, your repair bills, and as long as you don't endanger others around you then you're not breaking the law. This information was given to me by a highway patrolman and a county cop, and I've seen it happen, just don't have the balls to try it myself.

Last summer i was on my way to the New Engalnd Dragway when a state trooper pulled me (a 93 factory cx dropped) and a mustang gt over and gave me a $500 "speed drag racing" ticket no if ands or buts about it, he said that there are witnesses that called it in. When i went to court for the appeal i didn't have to say a word, the prosecutor read off what the officer wrote in his report and the magistrate straight up told me i'm not responsible cause the tropper didn't state who i supposedly racing with or the speed we were supposedly going. How the hell im i gonna race a mustang gt with a factory cx that struggles to get up to 80mph.....lol

I live out in a subrural area... and on Friday and Saturday nights, if you're on your way to the dragway (75-80) the cops won't mess with you at all... because usually they're on their way there also, to watch. I've heard reports of people speeding by in cars with no tags, no exhaust, etc. etc. etc.... as long as you're going to race, the cops are fine with it. Probably only works in an area like mine, though.

You should find that cop's badge #, probably on your ticket, and report him for profiling. See if you can get him written up for being a dick. :naughty:

i recently got a ticket for violating vehicle code 23109a, speed contest.

the road is 3 lanes wide. i was coming up to a red light and there were about 3-4 cars in each of the left and middle lanes. most of the traffic was moving rather slowly that night, so i pulled into the right lane where there were no cars. the right lane was going to merge with the middle lane and i was planning on passing the cars before the lanes merged. when the light turned green, i took off slowly. i sped up a little to try to get ahead of the car on my left. that car was moving quickly too, so i sped up. he sped up too, so i sped up some more. i was trying to pass, and he was trying to box me out. we were both accelerating hard at this point. but the lanes were about to merge, so i let off the throttle at about 45mph and pulled behind the other car. this all happened in several seconds. moments later, i see flashing lights and we're both pulled over. the estimated speed on my ticket is 50 in a 40. i have a bone stock integra ls and he was driving a 5.0.

i just received my ticket in the mail. no bail amount, just a YOU MUST APPEAR IN COURT. i talked to several cops, and they said the traffic judge is pretty lenient, but i'm still worried. the violation carries a 1000+ fine, 2 points, and possible jail time. i'm also considering getting a lawyer.

sounds like you were driving perfectly reasonably. If you stopped accelerating and got behind the other car at or slightly above the speed limit, you should probably get off. The other guy should get a ticket for trying to box you out... thats more dangerous(not to mention illegal) that passing in the right lane.

Update on the situation:

I went to court his morning to see the judge. I did what oc_civic recommended and asked to plead to a lesser charge. I didn't realize it at the time but the county's prosecutor (or their clerk) was standing right next to me.

It was reduced to a simple speeding ticket. $100 + penalties and assesments came out to $321. I'm relatively happy, because the fine for what I was originally charged with was $500, and + P&A would have come out to about $1500.

There was another fellow in court for exhibition of speed and speeding on the highway. We went upstairs to pay for our fines about the same time, his bill was $1300 .
