Default Transmission Fluid

D16Y8, Manual Tranny. I think it's about time for me to change my transmission fluid, but I'm not keen on paying the Honda dealer insane labor rates to do it.

Can anyone point me to some sort of tutorial on doing it yourself? Is it hard? Also .. any special fluid recommendations? Or stick to the Honda stuff?

its really easy......run the car to warm it up, put the front of the car up on jackstands so that its on an angle so it will drain better, remove the drain plug with a 3/8 inch ratchet, let the fluid drain out, put the plug back in, pour in the new fluid (Honda tranny fluid), start up the car, shift it through all the gears slowly a few times, check the fluid level, and add more fluid if you need it. It should only take you about a half hour to do...its even easier than changing your oil.

On my '98 (I would imagine it would probably be the same place or a similar spot on your car), the drain plug (for an auto tranny) is located on the tranny casing behind where your passenger side front wheel is. Basically, just look around the casing until you see something that looks similar to a bolt, but is round with a square in the center. You need to simply take a 3/8" rachet, put it right in the square, and turn to drain it. When you put the fluid back in, just pour it down the same hole that you take your tranny dipstick out of. Its kind of wedged in there, and its a pain to pour into, but you'll figure out a way. I just used a funnel, and then manuevered the bottles in there and eventually found a way to do it.

This is for a GSR, but it's the same process:

You need a little over 2qt(read:buy 3), use Honda MTF.

No, the motor oil does not run into the tranny. 5 Speed Civics don't have a dipstick for the tranny like autos do. The way you check the level on a manual Civic tranny is to open up the fill bolt, put your finger in, and the fluid level is supposed to be level with the bottom of the fill hole.
