Default 01 Civic A/t tranny problem

Could someone give me an idea what is wrong with this 01 civic a/t tranny? It shifts from 2nd to 3rd kind of slowly causing it to rev the engine a few hundred rpms before it engages and from 3rd to 4th it does the same thing, but a little worse. It improves after it is driven awhile. I just got the car and did the tranny fluid refill 3 times as recommended with Honda ATF and going to do it again when I service the engine next time. I also notice if I manually shift the gears and hold each gear at a higher rpm, like 4k, it shifts more firm. Please, I would be very thankful for any info on this.

Default Forget to add this

The tranny fluid that I drained out was gray and smelled burnt. I have been checking it a lot to see if the new fluid becomes burnt or discolored. So, far no. Thanks for any info.

Depending on the mileage it might still be covered under warranty. Go to your Honda dealer and find out.

Thanks for the reply. I will give them a call and see what they say, but my mileage is must likely to high with 160k.

Yeah, too many miles. You did the best, wisest first step by changing the fluid.(as well as making sure it's Honda ATF).
I was once told that adjusting the shift cable (?) could potentially clear up issues like that, I believe what you're describing is called a shift flare. Years ago I had a '90 Prelude with less-than-attentive previous owners (plus it had been wrecked) that would occasionally do that, but it was rare, and you didn't really feel anything, just hear the slight flare and see the tach. rise before falling when going from 2nd to 3rd. I don't even remember if they tried changing the fluid back then (not a dealership), they said they could try the cable thing and it didn't help at all.

Chances are it's a wear thing, to do with the clutch packs or whatever (too little material left or screens being clogged by said material), but I'd do the same thing in your situation. If after driving it a while, and draining and refilling it once or twice more, the problems persists, I suppose I'd get the opinion of a Honda tech. (unless you can find something more by searching here, google, etc.) Best of luck.

The cable wont do a thing. What it is, is the 2nd gear clutch is wearing out. I have seen this quite a bit, and all have needed a new trans

Thanks for the replies, It sounds like I might do a trade for another brand car.
