Default What Motor to Swap

Ok first of all I read alot and researched alot but just cant make a decision and would like some help.

Here is my situation:

I have an EK hatch and swaped in gsr brakes all around pw/ps/ac. I love that body style and its used for a DAILY COMMUTER (very important in my reasoning).

The Dilema:

I need a engine that will give me the following: MPG's, Torque/HP, cheap, easy to swap and I will Bar'd/Ref the motor into the car. The only one that i can come up with is an 99-01 LS motor. The benefits are a decent Torque/HP and cheap to get and takes regular unleaded.

Now before any one states why dont you get a B18C1, C5 or B16A2 or any other engine, keep in mind that i need a commuter car that will give me more HP/Torque at a cheap cost that I can Bar. I dont want to build a track or autoX vehicle. I thought hard and long but cannot come up with any other engines besides an LS motor. If anyone has another view on the topic please feel free to chime in. I am looking to keep all the pw/ps/ac so any help would be appreciated.

If anyone knows where I can get an engine thats in good shape or any info I should know please feel free to chime in. I am located in Sacramento, ca

Thanks ahead of time.

I don't know man most people will tell you to go b-series. That's what I would do in your situation. Another question would be the budget your on a b series can be pricey depending on where you get it but good luck on a decision man hope I helped a lil bit

Budget is not the issue for me. I am planing to probably rebuild the motor to get the maximum life out of the engine. I want a commuter vehicle that will give me better power and still keep decent MPG's. Keep in mind that I dont want a racer or else I would definately go with the B18C5 or K20. Since this is used primary for work and commuting I want to make it a cost efficient build. That is my goal.

If budget isn't an issue, k20 would yield the best power/mpg's. K24 would yield the best torque, and still get decent mpg's.

If that's too baller for you, H22A's are pretty damn cheap considering the 200hp/160tq they make, but you'll need aftermarket mounts and axles to fit it into your car, bringing the cost up a little.

And if you just want ho-hum... if you're considering the LS motor, why not get a b20? hmotorsonline.com sells them for like $800 and you get the power of an LS with a healthy bump in torque. Definitely get the 99-00 version though... higher compression compared to the stupidly low 8.8 of the pre-99 version.

B20 all day long mated to a GSR trans. B20 > B18 in all aspects as far as a funish daily driver on a budget.

Now will the B20 be able to get bar'd in california? I am looking to get the vehicle bar'd so I wont get hasseled by the cops? Also for further on down the line, how hard would it be to put a F20C into my Ek?

As long as the motor is the same year or newer than the car and all the emissions equipment is present and working, I think you should fine. I'm not from CA, but that is my understanding of the rules.

I'm not sure on the f20c... I read that the f22b can be swapped using h-series aftermarket mounts (with some modification), but I don't know if the f20c shares the same layout/mounting points or anything. Why f20c? Do you have one laying around?

No I dont have one laying around but after I get tired of using my ek for a commuter, I would probably want to do something else with it. The F20c is just something I dont hear alot about. I dont know if its doable or not but when that time comes I want to stand "Outside the Norm".

F20C is unpossible. It spins the opposite way and is 99% like the K series. To put an F20C into your ride would take about 20k and some serious fabrication knowledge.

If you wanted to go a route like that I would rec a K series swap, plenty of support and the prices are coming down considerably.
