ok, basically, a tie bar links both sides of your suspension and provides you with rigidity. A sway bar helps to transfer the momentum of your car, and dramatically limits your body lean (going around turns). Generally, the thicker a swaybar, the better it works (although there are drawbacks of having very thick ones) Depending on what type of civic you have, there is a chance it comes stock with a front sway bar. I'm not sure about 5th gens, but I know all 6th gen Lxs , Exs, and Sis have a front sway (22mm). Sis came with a rear swaybar as well (some say 13mm but Honda says 15mm). I personally put an '99 Si rear swaybar on my Lx to compliment my stock front one, and have a Neuspeed tiebar on the back as well.

Heres a pic...hope it helps. If you have questions, let me know.

do you have to have tie bars and sway bars on at the same time, or can you just have one or the other??

I'm not sure about hatches, but on my '98 Sedan, I didn't have to drill extra holes. The holes were already there in my lower control arm. Its easy to tell. Just go out to your car, and look down at your back wheels...if you see a hole in your control arm, then you don't have to drill (if you look in my picture, you'll see a bolt in the extreme left hand side of the picture...this is where the hole would be if you had it).

The tiebar is the piece that says Neuspeed. The tie bar connects to the pivot joints that hold your lower control arms to the body of the car. It basically helps connect each side of your suspension together, and provides you with rigidity. Tie bars don't connect sway bars...they are two seperate entities.

You don't have to put tie bars and sway bars on at the same time. You can have one or the other, or both. Since they are not connected, you are able to put them on at different times. I put mine on together because I figured if I was working down there, I might as well kill two birds with one stone. Also, by adding both pieces at one time, you'll notice a more dramatic effect in handling than if you added them seperately.

oh, and also....since you have a hatch, its either a Dx or a Cx, and to the best of my knowledge, they did not come with front sway bars. You would have to get one of them too. You could just get one from an Ex or an Si (again, the holes and everything are probably there), or go with an aftermarket one.
