id get a new one personally and check the rest of your exhaust for rust..but thats me :werd:

 

I tore off my heat shield from my catalytic converter on an older car and never had a problem. It was rusty as hell and eventually a hole wore in the converter itself and it increased in noise output quite a bit, but it was still functional and lasted for several more years before I dropped the tranny. Awesome!
