It just occured to me that you could take a look at your tranny fluid. If a bearing is grinding then the fluid will probably have metal flakes in it. I lost a bearing earlier this summer and there was alot of metal flakes in there. That bearing didn't make much noise at all it just blew the mainshaft seal and spewed oil on my clutch. On the other hand I changed my clutch, pilot bearing, and throwout bearing last summer. My car was making a gawd awful racket when I would take off. It turns out that was the pilot bearing was shot. My point here is that there really is no way to tell until you drop the tranny. You can probably get away with driving on it for a while. I would save enough money to replace the clutch and tranny since that is the worst case scenario.

Thanx, I will take a look at my fluid today. If I have to do anything like replace the tranny, I'll go with a b18c1 swap, since I'm getting a deal from a friend.

I believe I'm having the same prob. I drive a '96 civic ex. I thought it was the throwout bearing based on cars I've had in the past. I had a new clutch kit dropped in a day ago, and it's still making the same grinding noise in 1st gear. In 2nd gear the noise is less pronounced. In 3rd and 4th and 5th gear, you really can't hear it anymore. I know my tranny fluid/filter is long overdue to be changed.

I guess i'm going to have to check the tranny bearings also from the sounds of the replies here.

i just replaced my input shaft bearing. Had to take off the whole tranny then the bell housing to get into the bearings and it fixed the grinding sound. Cheap ass bearing. Poor enginering from honda
