To check your upper ball joint, grab the steering knuckle above the tire and pull back in forth in all directions. If it makes a sound, you definitely need a new one. I had clunking sounds too but are gone with a newer upper ball joint. It's easier to steer too now.

Could be alignment. Have you ever seen a trailer going down the road behind a truck (not a semi, just a small trailer), and it's going back and forth so fast that the driver is either going to lose control or has to drive slow. That's what bad alignment looks like only made more obvious. I've noticed horrible traction and control on wet pavement because of bad alignment.

It may not be your main problem, but don't discount it.

rip in ball joint boots will cause the clunking.. the shimmy will depend on which joint boot is ripped. lastly, clicking noises are normally associated with cv joints going bad.
The rip itself wont do a thing except for allow dirt in that will cause the joint to wear out.

CV joints will usually make most all of their noise when turning. That's the only time the balls in them are moving and could make noise. When the car is rolling in a striaght line, they barely have any motion. As with the ball joint boots, A ripped CV boot doesn't cause the clunking, but does need to be addressed.

Anytime you hear clunking noises, find it and fix it so you don't kill people.
