After reading this I decided to polish mine on my 99 LX last night.

I took my makita grinder with a dewalt wire wheel on it, threw it in the vice and went to town. Turned out waaaaaay better than I thought it was gonna. I then polished it with some bright metal polish that I got from my father in-laws machine shop. Even he said they couldn't have done any better. I will snap some pics tonight hopefully and post them up.
