Default question about b16 tranny

ok heres the deal. Im basically done with my civic :yay: , all i have to do is wait til my dad gets a day off of work since my current car is registered under his name and itll be on the road. So last night me and my dad were talkin bout cars (like we always do cause we are jus gearheads at heart ), and he mentions to me that he has a b16 tranny at his shop that some old guy had but i guess the guy crashed his car. Now from what my dad tells me the tranny is in great condition. Now my question is how bad will this affect my gas mileage? ..I dont know if i should just keep the ls tranny and drive it for a while or jus get the b16 tranny. What do u guys think? the guy wants 300$ for the tranny so i dont wanna miss this oppurtunity. Thanx.

P.S. Pics will be up in soon....:boink:

I'm gonna assume a b18b.

It all depends on what the cars for. A b18b with a LS tranny will get easily beaten by one with the YS1 tranny. I aslo believe the YS1 has the shortest gear ratios.

Switching to a shorter geared tranny will always lower your mileage, especially so if you frequent a major highway or the like. Your worst possible problem here is revving a B18b with shorter gears for extended periods of time when the engine wasn't constructed to do so. The difference between the max revs between the two engines is almost 1500 RPM. I personally wouldn't do it to a daily driven B18.

id spring for a GSR if anything, but the B16 tranny would be nice.

A b18b redlines at what... 7000rpms? At 70mph you'll be at 4000rpms, not leaving you much room left on the tach.

having driven both a b18b with a b16a tranny and a b18b with an LS tranny.....throw your LS tranny away...that b16a tranny will make driving your car about 89312940194 billion times better.
