Holy crap, that thread has a lot of hits now.

It's actually illegal to tamper with the odometer reading. If you need an odometer to match what your car currently has you take it to a odometer shop so they can give you all the legal paperwork if you sell the car later.
My friend did this for me when my OEM gauges broke and I had to buy new ones. You could go to jail and be fined for tampering with the odometer if someone finds out about it later.

It's not against the law to re-use the odometer that came with your car in a new cluster as long as you don't muck with the mechanics that make it work. All that matters is the mileage stays correct. The link I posted shows you how to resolve your issue legally.
EDIT: But CivicSiRacer is correct. You cannot legally change an odometer under any circumstance, or replace it with another one... unless it fails. If you do, you will get caught. The penalties are stiff.

I'm not sure that you guys know that I want to roll the mileage FORWARD. My car has 426,050 miles on it. It's hard to find a replacement that has that many miles. I'm not trying to take miles off of it, But put them on. As my username may indicate, I'm proud of my "Highmile" car.

I have seen that link (and even replied to it when I saw it two weeks ago). My speedo is all stickin' and stuff, that's why I need to change it (so I don't have to puch the dash to see how fast I'm going, looks really bad when a cop is behind me and I'm all punching the dash to see if I'm speeding or not!). The speedo is the same unit as the odometer. Maybe this will shed some light on a little of the world I live in (behind the wheel). Thanks guys.
