This is starting to get old...

I think this is silly. Since ANY turbo car is only as good as its engineering, I think the foundation of your argument is condescending on his ability to put a car together, and it seems insulting based on that because you're in TX, don't know him, and haven't seen his car. At least that's the way I see it. Correct me if I'm wrong.
Most people will buy a kit and take the easy way out, but they won't learn nearly as much about forced induction as someone who puts it together themselves. At least he'll learn more than anyone that forked out $ for a kit. I have more respect for budget racers than I do for someone that paid several times more for the same end result. Those are the guys that actually know their shit. They just don't have trendy engine bays full of overpriced fashion accessories. You really don't need money to go fast.
Let him learn what he needs to about airflow + fuel control and stop hating just because he didn't buy some carbon copy kit that everybody already has. What are you afraid of if he gets it right, anyway?

See you are getting home made, junkyard, and assembled kits confused. If you buy a Turbonetics T3, a revhard manifold, AEM EMS, greddy BOV, Tial wastegate, spearco intercooler and piping all new it's not home made. Junkyard is junkyard, self explanitory. Buying hard parts from vendors is not "preassembled" either. I have raced most of my life and I have had a boosted car longer than 99% of the people on this board and I have yet to see a fast junkyard turbo car (meaning non turbo car from factory made to be turbocharged with junkyard parts). And by fast I mean mid 13's or lower.

12's on a stock Z6 with "Basic parts". What the hell does "basic parts" mean. I doubt it unless it's missing doors, trunk, etc. First off, seeing his car means nothing. I've seen pics of his set-up. I'm not knocking budget racers because I am one myself. But I have learned a lot when it comes to turbo kits and I am not saying that all prefab kits are great only that a turbo kit is only as good and reliable as the parts and engineering used to build it. Buying a prefab kit froma known retailer saves a lot of time because they have done all the R&D. I have personal knowledge of crappy prefab kits too. I installed a turbo kit from Cybernations on my cousins RSX and while some of it's hard parts were good, the electronics and exhaust parts were badly designed. Keep in mind that this was one of teh first kits for teh RSX but you still have to know a lot when compiling a good kit. many peopel think they know and in reality they do not know shit. If I find a good route I stay with it because it works. Copying a set-up that is proven is not bad, it's smart. There is no way you will see huge numbers on junkyard parts alone. Period. This point cannot be argued. I don't care who you are, or what your experience is, no hodge podge kit will generate good numbers for long. Of course this is all my personal opinion so take no offense. Peace.
