Default Help with gas gauge

Does anyone know or maybe care to explain what might be causing my gas gauge to fluctuate an entire half tank at some points during travel? it also seems like my fuel economy has gone to shit since this started happening too.

I've never had this problem before so its def not normal and the amount of fluctuation is way more than it should be. i can never tell how much gas i really have anymore. i assume something in the tank end of it is broken but i figured id see if someone had this same problem and how easy it is to fix. thanks for anything

i have a 95 civic lx sedan, with a similar problem. is your tank under pressure? when you take the gas cap off does air force out? thats what happens to mine, and i also have the extreme fluctuation in my gas gauge, but usually no more than 1/4 of a tank. As far as mileage, i think its just the gauge thats messed up, cause i can drive my car to E and have about 260 miles to the tank (with deliveries and fairly high rpm shifting), and then i fill it up, and it only takes 8 gallons, this is a 12 gallon tank, so there is still tons of gas, but the meter says you have none. make sure you are checking the MPG for the gas you are using. hope this helps somewhat.

I'm sportin a '95 dx too, with the same problem... I only notice the guage move when im going up a hill or down a hill, usually when Im going up it lowers, and going down it says I have more then I actually do. I haven't noticed a change in my fuel economy so I'm not too worried about it, but I'll keep an eye on it.

thanks guys ill keep an eye on the fuel economy and the problem is indeed on the tank end i found out its a breaking not broken tank float and u can only fix it by cutting the tank in half and welding it back together obviously not an easy or cheap job so i guess ill live with it
