Thank You HAN
hey guys, i know a bunch of you have been waiting for my write up or some pix or something now that my project has finally come together! So here she is! I wrote this a few weeks ago & just didn't have a chance to pull the pix to stick it in here but.. yea.. give me a few min to put it all together & i'll have the pix in here too!
Hey guys, i figured that i better get this up here coz i really do owe this to the members & this site. My car Runs & is Drivable once again because of Honda-Acura.net & it's members!
Oct. of 2003 my 95 Honda Civic EX Show Vehicle got a flat tire.
My current vehicle consisted of:
D16z6
Automatic
Pulley's
Shinny Crap
AEM Fuel system
& a ZEX nitrous Kit
The car was horribly slow, & this was mainly because of the automatic transmission, it was definatly un-tuned but the car was only gettin 16.8's at the track!
I kno that some of you would classify my car as RICE but, i love it & the looks that it gets!
Anyways, the engine was pulled because i knew that winter was comming & my buddy that i thought knew what he was doing was going to help me out due to the fact that he was ASE certified mechanic. I was all excited, ready to order my B18 & ready to fly!
My knowlage was only about as far as changing oil & adjusting things, didn't really kno what i was getting my self into. Once the engine was pulled i started to get a little bit of fear built up that it wouldn't run again! I had a loan out on the vehicle so it probably wasn't the best idea to start this type of a project until the vehicle was paid off but i was way to anxious.
My buddy was getting out of the honda scene & had just got all his parts together for the b18 build up, he completed the build of the motor (B18a1) & really just wasn't into it anymore so i purchased the forged motor from him at a cost of $3500 bucks. The motor consisted of a B18a1 block with the Eagle sleeves & pistons / rods ect. kit that Summit Racing was currently selling. Compression on the engine was lowered to 8.8:1 & the head was port & polished, with a stock intake manifold & what not. This guy was really into speed & not looks so i basicly spent a lot of time cleaning the engine coz i'm really picky & i also run a powder coating shop out of my garage so i went at it for a while on the motor.
By about January, we were ready to set the engine in mycar, i had no idea about swap mounts or OBD's or anything along those lines, so needless to say, we ran into a lot of problems.
Engine didn't lign up
Plugs didn't match
Axles didn't fit right
TONS of stuff that i just can't even remember because there was so much of it!
at this point the dash was pulled out & the stock wiring harness was removed upon my buddy's request because he said something was up with the wiring so we went to the junk yard & cut plugs off of an older teg harness & he began to solder them onto the dash harness that was pulled from my car! (this was horrible!!)
Anyways, i started to question my buddy a little bit & started to look on the internet for some solutions, he knew something was up with the obd's not workin out so he went at it for 14hrs. & made an entire wire harness, & i searched the internet & found some stuff saying the total oppisite stuff as him! i kept it to my self for a while because i didn't want to make him mad that i was questioning his knowlage when i didn't really know anything.
His custom harness was put in by spring & still didn't work, engine would crank but no fire, i was extreamly pissed off, we ended up having a falling out & i think he realized that he really ****ed up my car & had no idea what he was doing & quit workin on it. He soon after disappeared & i haven't seen him since, i hear from people that he's still around but he won't show his face really. It was really weird coz we used to be best friends, he even lived with me for a while.
Anyways, i was exteramly frustrated & put my car on ebay as a big wiring mess, which almost sold for about 5k along with EVERYthing that i had for it! someone would have got a really good deal if they knew what they were gettin into coz i had probly 10k worth of parts sittin there! I just wanted to pay off the loan & start fresh coz i was soooo frustrated & all my buddys were out crusin & what not & i couldn't.. i was more depressed than you could ever imagine!
After summer was almost over & i could bare to look at the car again, i realized that i needed to learn everything that i could on my own & complete my project. I'm not one for giving up & i never have before & somehow i just got motivated to work on it!
I went out to the garage & i tore everything apart & organized it, then i got online & came back to this web site that i had been reading a lot on every chance i got. I started to become a little bit involved on here & asked some specific questions. I started becomming more & more knowlageable about different parts on the engine & what they do & why & began to figure out why it wasn't workin in my car.
To manke a long story short, i spent all of Fall pulling an entire interior car harness from a 95 DX (no power optioins) & didn't cut 1 wire so that i knew that the harness was perfect! Then i began to put it back into my car so that it was just like it should have been before (un-touched) This process took for ever coz people don't put car harnesses into the under-dash section of a car too ofton & resources for this are limited. I finally got it in & all my buttons inside the car began to work again, it was like her heart began to beat & just wanted more attention. When i saw all the headlights / tail lights & windows & what not working this just motivated me even more to continue. Then I recieved an offer from one of the board members (LEE = B16aEGcivic).
He drove 4hrs from MI to north eastern Ohio to help me out! God bless that kid, i don't think he'll ever know how much his help actually means to me! I have my car life back because of him.
He came down on a friday night & i don't think he realized how deep of a project he was really getting him self into. We went all through my car setup & what i had & didn't have & he clarified all the info that i was reading & studing up on honda-acura.net
By saturday afternoon we had my engine out & a parts list put together on the final things that i needed to make my baby breeth again. Over the course of the following 2 weeks i gathered from the classifieds on honda-acura.net & ebay to get ahold of everything that i needed.
It was like christmas every day that i showed up at my house, coz the UPS & FedEX guys were making regular stops. I also visited the local junk yard like 5 times that week.
Once i got everything i needed it was time to start putting everything together that i could & get it all organized. I got my engine put together with the correct OBD-1 parts to match up with my car & all the hoses & vacume lines & axles & just everything i needed to get my car going.
Let me tell u, there is no better way to learn than to do it your self!
Lee was planning on comming down & one weekend & i ended up getting the car together a couple days before he was going to come down, i was standing in front of my car & had my neighbor crank the key to see if i was getting spark & when he did it sparked & i was in shock that it acutally worked.. when i looked up to tell him that he could stop cranking.. there was fuel squirting out of the fuel filter that didn't have the hose on it yet & i was in total amazment!!! i couldn't believe what i saw! He stoped cranking & i just stood there in awe! The next words that came out of my mouth was, "we have spark.. we have fuel... MY CAR SHOULD RUN!!!!"
i began to connect my plug wires & my fuel rail & what not & noticed that i was lacking a set of obd-1 injectors.... "big frown"
light bulb goes off in head.. i have a 95DX daily driver in the driveway.. we'll rip the injectors out of that to see if it works! lol bad idea coz i broke something when i went to put them back.. but anyways..
my car fired up .. MAN did it smoke for a while!!!
had lots of vacume leaks & what not so it wouldn't idle yet & it didn't have coolant in it so i couldn't keep it running for a long period of time or anything but at that point i was even more motivated than ever. I called lee imediatly & was like "IT RUNS!!!!!!!"
lol yea.. i was extreamly excited! you people probly just wouldn't understand how much coz of the amount of hell that i've gone through with this car!
To complete this story, i've got it running & drivable now, & she's boostin very nicely! I'm breaking the engine in at about 4lbs of boost right now & she's pullin very hard, engine has no apparent problems yet & i've put about 150miles on it so far.
ACT 6 Puck Clutch & Extream Pressure Plate isn't as harsh of an engagement as i thought it was going to be.. with is kinda nice.. i haven't dumped it yet coz i'm bein nice to the clutch for a while.. but i like it!!
I've got a few more minor lil things to work out.. as everyone does after theirs swap.. but it's workin out well. & i'm really excited about this upcomming summer!
I've tried to toss some of the pix into the story but i'll attach more here shortly.
Thank You Lee & Thanks to evertyone that has helped me here at HAN
I have gained a great deal of knowlage from this project & the people that i've communicated with on this board & i hope that i will be able to help someone else out there as much as everyone here as helped me. I've actually have a swap project lined up for this weekend that i'm doing for someone else. Goal time is 8hrs. I'll have to let u guys know how it goes!
Thanks again
