Default where can I find a vtec-e engine at a good price in good condition?

I have a crx dx model but i only get like 29 mpg with an automatic but also is leaking oil and other problems and i like to make it more fuel effiecient. I wanted to throw a vtec-e on my 96 htachback but since the crx is lighter might be better for the engine on the crx.

the 96-00 HX had VTEC-E so it might be easier to put it in your 96. But if you're CRX is in need for a new engine, it would get better fuel mileage due to it's lighter weight. Swapping it would be just like a normal D-series with a few more wiring headaches.

BTW VTEC-E is not a thing, it's a technology. Just like normal VTEC.

92-95 VTEC-E - VX - D15Z1
96-00 VTEC-E - HX - D16Y5

these engines can usually be found in classifieds forums for really cheap since not a lot can be done with them to make power.

oh, sorry, I'm in CO... I've got a d15z1 looking for a new home, but I can't ship it.

The very best milage I got from my vx (driving through Nebraska at about 80mph) was about 41, although low 30's was more typical.

I think it would be difficult to compare the efficiency of the vx and hx motors because they came in two fairly different cars (in terms of weight and aerodynamics). I'd assume the vx motor is probably the more efficient of the two simply because of its lower displacement and power output.

http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/findacar.htm is a good site to use for fuel economy numbers.

But it really depends on how you drive and the vehicle. I regularly saw fill ups with fuel numbers in the high 50mpg, but I also saw mid 20mpg when the O2 sensor was just about to go out and I was driving with a really heavy foot. The highest I ever saw was right after a tune up and a new O2, 62.5mpg for a 212mile drive. That was also a cool damp night, fairly level ground, I drove right at 55 the entire time and very little traffic. That would be ideal.
Like white_n_slow said... typical was in the high 30s around town and mid 40s on the highway.

I noticed a couple threads in you trying to bump up fuel economy. I have a few other tips:

1) regular tune ups (spark plugs & wires, distributor rotor & cap, etc.)
2) get a very light set of wheels with thin tires (185 or 195 width at most). A set of HX wheels would be a cheap way to go as they are much lighter than the factory steelie/hubcaps that came on the 96 HB and 90 CRX.
3) most importantly, take it easy on the gas/brake pedals
