Fastest SOHC d16y8 Civic I've seen was doing mid 12's street legal. You will get lower times with a DOHC tweaked in the same fashion as the SOHC. If mid 12's isnt what your looking for and you want to get lower times then yea do a swap to a better engine.

Did it with stock sleeves... and a real good tune... and he has one of the less hp SOHC that have been built. Gitwitit is looking to run 10's this year with his SOHC, maybe lower.
The SOHC has a stigma about it not having power, just pull it and go, but with some machine work and a high quality bottom end, you can make moster power with one. Any you will be a lot lighter than a C1 or C5...
