Default bigger rims = f*cked speed?????

if i get bigger rims than my stock rims, is this going to affect my speedometer reading? my dad was saying that if i put 16" wheels on a car that is made for 14" wheels its going to f*ck with my speedometer readings giving me a differnt speed than im actually going? is he right or full of it?

your tires on your 16's will be lower profile so it should be almost the same diameter as your 14's. The change on your speedometer will be minimal, if any.

I know that when I got 17's they were only 50's so they ended up being almost the exact same height as my stock 14's with 65's.

wierd.... this thread is in the accord forum too... youre speed readings with stock wheels is kinda high... bigger rims will actually make the reading a bit lower

hahah parents always say stuff like that. I had some 17's with 205/40/17 tires on them and they hardly threw off my speed. At 100 mph it was maybe only off 3 mph. BUT if you get bigger/heavier rims it will KILL your acceleration...believe me. I raced my buddies stock spec v from a 40 punch and i i'd pull him EXACTLY 3 cars 40-100. I took them off and sold em and put on my steelies temporarily. I raced him 5 times and pulled him by 6 cars consistently. It will be good for a good .3 seconds on a car like ours that is drastically affected by weight...especially unsprung weight.

People need to get their facts straight. When you buy larger wheels you go down in sidewall height so you keep the overall diameter the same.

For a Civic pre-2001:
185/65x14"
195/55x15"
205/45x16"
205/40x17" - this will throw off your speedo a bit since no one make s 215/35x17" tire
215/35x18" - this will throw off your speedo a bit since no one make s 225/25x18" tire

When my friend put 35" tires on his truck he got a gear to swap out the stock one on the speedo cable to correct the reading. I assume, since nobody has mentioned it, that no such thing exists for our civics?

:dunno:

Is it really worth it? You're going to spend $$$ on something that might mess your speedo up by 1-2mph? Your speedo is not always the same, due to tire temperature changes which changes your air pressures.

I was quoted this by a speedometer shop my friend works at. They only set your speedo within a couple hundred miles.

ok so putting these wheels on will really not mess my speedo up that much? am going to notice a drastic change in the way my car accelerates by putting 16's on? i don't drag or go to the track or anything so lossing half a second or whatever somebody said i really don't car about, but am i really going to see a difference and wish i never bought them?
