They can most certainly sacrifice the longivity of your engine, its an open element filter, it definitely has a higher risk of collecting more garbage. A cold air intake also has a filter that sits lower, closer to the street where debris can hit the filter. A cold air intake can also suck in water, which could destroy the motor. So yes a cold air intake can sacrifice the longivity of the motor.

Am I completly off in that, or would I get better power if I spent the cash for a tube to replace my rubber stock one ?
There is no other air filter, that rubing is just running down to a resonator box behind the bumper.

Besides intakes, I have heard of slightly advancing the igniton timing. Does this do any good? I know you risk knocking, but could that be overcome with higher octane fuel?

You can do it and it helps slightly, but yeah you have to use a higher octane fuel. If you're used to using regular and you have to go to premium, then you're spending more money on gas in the long run than the cost of an intake...

It would take you a VERY long time to spend an extra $300 on gas. Heck it would still take a while to spend an extra $40 on gas.

A CAI does not cost $300. In any event, let's be serious, if you really have no money then there is no point in doing one mod, whatever that may be.

The gain you get with an intake is insignificant.
You dont feel the difference if anything the noise you hear from the intake makes you believe your car is moving faster.

That extra 1-2 hp isnt worth spending 150- 200 on a CAI.
at least my opinion.
