Ok we just installed a 96 gsr into an Ek. At the moment we have a gsr computer in there OBD2. We also have a Type R ECU with the OBD2-OBD1 harness on the way. What do you think will run better? Also What are the diffrences? Thanks guys!

GSR ecu will run a stock GSR motor prefectly fine.
Type R ecu will run it a lil higher redline and a mild difference in fuel tables and ignition
I would recomend the GSR ecu.

To run the Type R ECU you'll either have to remove the secondary butterfries in the intake manifold or run an aftermarket intake manifold. If you're planning on keeping the secondary butterflies i suggest running the GSR ECU.

he hit it right on th head. The other ecu you could use would be a p13 or an obd2 h22 ecu. It trades where vtec and the secondaries kick in, but might be worth a try...

I've always wondered why someone doesn't take the secondary butterflies and hook them to the VTEC line through a relay. that way everything opens up when you hit VTEC.
anyway... like said above, the GSR ECU will run it better, unless you go to the Skunk2 intake manifold.

you have an OBD1 TypeR ECU???

Don't forget that a GS-R's cams are optizmed for a VTEC point at 4400 rpm, while a Type R is around 5700. Also, the Type R will have a higher redline/fuel cutoff then the GS-R but without upgraded cams or valve springs, the additional rpm range is worthless and potentially dangerous. If you stuck a skunk2 IM and upgraded your GS-R with Type R cams and valve springs, I'd definately say go with the ITR computer but without those, I'd stick with a GS-R. If your determined to do something, consider a fuel tuning computer (like a V-AFC) and some dyno time. Get you more power than the ITR computer most likely.

cool Thanks guys! It's actually my cusins car. I just dropped in a 96 grs and auto to manuel. I ran a stock 90 ls with a b16 tranny and he ate me up. The motor feels funny. Im not getting no CEL. Seems like the motor does'nt pull hard until VTEC kicks in. Maybe it's me but I don't think a stock 90 LS with a b16 tranny will eat up a Gsr with headers, Short ram, and 2 1/4 piping with N1.

Make sure the secondaries are working properly. Warm the engine up and pop the hood and watch the diaphram attached to the intake manifold on the passanger side. Have a buddy zip the engine to 6000rpm and you should see that diapharm open and close as it passes ~5600 rpm (warm the engine up, not good to go over 4000ish rpm on a cold engine). If they're not hooked up, they default to open and can affect low rpm performance (I disconnected mine and couldn't really a difference but I've heard other people complain, I didn't drive that for long though). Check the timing as well.
