older cadilacs had those mirros in 'em, that should be quite easy to find in a junk yard. I know for a fact that to replace that mirror is a $400 part, well thats what a garagewould have top pay at least...

I guess there are different brands of auto dimming mirrors out there. I have noticed that the ones in my Audi, my brother's BMW and my mom's Mercedes all are transparent to me, probably all by the same manufacturer. I do know that ones in Fords and I think GMs don't work as well. Perhaps different manufacturers do different things.

You can actually get one for $99 brand new from a couple of sites. If you add on temperature display, compass display, and integrated map lights, then the price does go up. I just want a regular auto dimming mirror. I might just bite the bullet and pay the $99. I can't really find any on eBay for cheaper.

Did this on my '96 Del Sol. Definitely needed on a car that sits so low and where you drive around with the rear window down. It was easy to install. the one I have I got from a junk dealer (scotlandyardspares) on EBay. $40 shipped to me. It was off either a Caddy or Buick Roadmaster. Anyways, 3 wires. One negative, one positive, one ground. Wired it to the door as it comes with map lights. So, the lights come on when I open close the door, I can flick them on with the switch on the mirror, and the auto-dim feature works great. I did a search on EBay for mirrors and found TONS. Good luck!

Stupid noob question here-

(first let me check my ego at the door)

I know that Gentex makes the auto dim mirros for GM products and have seen some for sale on ebay (pretty reasonably priced), but is the windshield mount compatible? I read something about a "cam-lock" mount used on (some) Hondas.

I took a look at the mount on my 6th gen accord and couldn't find a set-screw anywhere ... although it was nighttime and my garage isn't very well lit .. anyone know how it comes off?

Most Japanese branded cars have cam lock rearview mirrors. You simply turn the mount to the right or left and the mirror will lift off, just as a wedge mount will. I have a new Donnelly mirror with compass, dimming and map lights installed I just have to figure out what wire to tap to get power near the fuse box (98 Accord EX-V6).

I purchased my mirror from American Security for $229. USD and free shipping. Just put one on my Tribute and my Miata without much drama.
