So call me an idiot... but what difference does the oil filter make. Is the shitty Fram going to leave a lot of crap in the oil leading to degradation sooner or something?

What are the benefits of paying extra for a K&N or Mobil 1 filter?

Quality filter = longer lasting motor.

btw, fram catches nothing!

The problem I've seen with Fram is that they use too much cardboard inside the filter. It just can't hold up to the pressures created by some engines (Honda)
I had to rebuild the engine in my Trans Am because a Fram filter came apart and pluged the oil pick up thus starving the engine for oil. Lucky for me because the previous owner did it and I got the car cheap and put a new engine in it for $700.

I've heard of many times when a fram filter's cardboard breaks loose and little particles jack up the engine. I would never put one of those on my car
