Default B16a2 head on b18b block?

i heard its possible but results in really high compression... how high?

do i need to change the pistons for valve clearance?

Yep, with stock B18b pistons, you're not gonna get much of a compression bump. B16A pistons will yield ~11:1 (not positive on that #) and B16B pistons will yeild 12.1:1, which is pretty high for a daily driver.

LS pistons have sufficient valve clearance, but you're not going to be able to capitalize much on the flow characteristics of the B16 head (the whole point of the head swap) unless you beef up the bottom end to withstand higher revs. Not wise to go past 7,000-7,500rpm on stock LS internals, and even that is asking more than what the motor was designed for.

hmmm.. i think i'll just leave the stock head on it... with mild PNP and maybe a pair of cams. my friend doesnt want a drag car, he just asked for some possibilities... he just wants more torque than a 1.6 can give esp at lower revs... he wants more of a daily driver... wheras im more into the rev-limiter banging goodness.

thanx alot

yeah, if low-end is the goal, lsvtec is not the right mod. The head swap itself actually shifts the powerband higher, killing off your low-end power. Although the same could be said for either of those mods you just mentioned (cams, headwork).

If you're looking for low end, a stock LS makes the same torque as a B18C, just a little lower. And a B20 makes more torque at 2000 rmps than a B18C makes anywhere in its powerband.

For daily driveability though, vtec is king. You can run relatively hot cams and keep stock idle. Such is not the case with the b18b.
