03 Civic knocks on cold startup
My 2003 Civic (1.7L) with 23K miles has started knocking briefly on startup on very cold (20 degrees or colder) mornings. I starts and runs ok for 3 or 4 seconds, then makes a knocking sound for approx 5 seconds and then the sound fades away and it runs fine. It sounds like it's more than a lifter, perhaps a rod? The frequency is 3-5 times per second.
I'm running Amsoil synthetic 0W/30 with a Mobil1 filter and this started shorlty after I switched from Amsoil 5W/30, but that's also when the really cold weather started.

It wouldnt be a rod, they dont make that kind of sounds. If anything it sounds like your lifters ticking. Have you noticed any oil loss?
Also, I use a thinner oil for the winter, my car usually starts easier with it.

Actually, the noise is more of a rapping sound, like the sound you hear briefly after changing the oil on some cars if you don't pre-fill the filter with oil.
It's strange, because it runs fine for several seconds, then makes the noise.
My guess is oil starvation of some sort, because the noise fades away slowly.
It sounds like it 's more than a lifter - isn't that usually more of a lighter ticking sound.
No oil loss, either.
I'll give the dealer a call and see what they advise.
What's Honda's stance on synthetic oil?
I know they want you to use genuine Honda everything in their vehicles.

Isn't Amsoil guaranteed not to void your warranty?

Will AMSOIL Motor Oils void the warranty of a new vehicle?
Absolutely not! Manufacturers’ warranties are based upon the use of oils meeting specific API Service Classifications, for example, SJ/CF. (AMSOIL lubricants meet the current API Service requirements and, thus, are perfectly suited for use in any new vehicle without affecting the validity of the new vehicle warranty.)
