transmission fluid change
hi, i have a 98 civic ex coupe d16y8 5spd and a 97 civic lx sedan d16y7 automatic,
i am just wondering how often do i need to do a tranny fluid change on the d16y7 automatic tranny?
Also since i can't check my fluid on my d16y8 5spd, how do i know when to change fluid?
thx

Every 15k under severe driving conditions for a manual.
Every 30k under severe driving conditions for an auto.
The automatic issue is touchy. Some mechanics say if it hasn't been changed in over 90k, don't change it. Changing super old trans fluid could cause the tranny to slip.

For a manual, change it every summer when you do the coolant, brake fluid, fuel filter and plugs. Even with good fluids and parts, it's going to cost less than $100 each year. Cheap insurance never hurts. I'd maybe do every 2 years on an auto since it's a pain sometimes (never did a Honda's before).

Changing super old trans fluid could cause the tranny to slip.
There are exeptions like Andy's Cherokee
Some cars/trucks have a drain plug on the pan allowing to do just a drain and fill without changing the filter, or some quick lubes will tell you to do your trans service for cheaper. The real use of these drain plugs is to drain the fluid before dropping the pan, if any one has done a auto trans service (fluid AND filter) without one of these plugs wished they had one.
