A strut is what a Macpherson strut suspension uses to dampen shocks. The difference between a shock and strut is that a strut rotates as you steer the wheels. There is a bearing in the strut mount which sits on the top of the strut. A Macpherson strut suspension doesn't have a upper control arm.

EDIT: This is only true for the front of the Macpherson strut suspension. The rear doesn't have a bearing because obviously the rear wheels do not steer. The rear suspension is usually a modified Macpherson strut suspension. The spring and strut are seperate and are not together. The spring is usually placed on the rear trailing arm and the strut is put behind the spring on the rear trailing arm.

Could you let a newbie know what the sway bar, lower tie bar, and bushing kit does.
A sway bar resists the tendency of the car to roll. By increasing or decreasing that resistance, you change the amount of load on the tires on each end of the car. This can affect a car's handling nature especially at the limit.

A lower tie bar is a chassis stiffening device. By stiffening the chassis you can reduce NVH and reduce the extra effects that chassis flex may have on overall handling.

A bushing kit is usually a kit that replaces the OEM rubber bushings with a harder durometer material such as polyurethane. This reduces extra play in suspension movement and keeps the suspension working in the range it was designed for.

Hope this helps and have fun with your new purchases.

:werd: There's a whole lot of misinformation out there. I, for one, am glad to see you and anyone else take a stand to help inform everyone else.

Thanks. I'm glad to see you're doing that too.

Also another thing that has been bothering me is the way you guys talk about "coilovers". A coilover is a coil spring that coils around the whole damper. A good example of this is our stock civic suspension. Notice how the coil goes over the whole shock. A coilover is not an height adjustable spring (i.e. ground control).

I've got the understanding that you got coilovers which are like a shock/spring combined that are fully-adjustable and then you got coilover sleeves which are what you get when you buy skunk2 and ground controls......am I correct?

Skunk2's and ground control's have sleeves to adjust spring height. If you take away the sleeves, they're just regular coil springs. They don't wrap around the whole shock like a coilover.
